PhD Studentship: HDR Models and Methods for Cinema Postproduction

Universidad Pompeu Fabra

Breve Descripción

The Information and Communication Technologies department at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain, invites applications for a PhD studentship position which is described below. This position is associated with the María de Maeztu Units of Excellence Research Program of the Spanish government, and involves joint work of the research labs of profs. Marcelo Bertalmío and Josep Blat.

Candidates should hold a M.Sc. with a solid background in mathematics and be proficient in spoken and written English. Experience in image processing, computer graphics and visual perception would be highly valuable.

Contact: please send application with CV, contact information of three references, and a summary of research accomplishments to marcelo DOT bertalmio AT upf DOT edu.

Description: The aim of the research work in this proposal is to develop vision models and software methods allowing us to properly handle high dynamic range (HDR) content during cinema postproduction, with three main goals: combining images of different dynamic range, conversion of dynamic range (tone mapping (TM) and inverse TM), and evaluation of TM results. The methodology will consist first in collecting a large number of radiance maps, both for HDR and low dynamic range images (LDR), using high quality photographic equipment for natural images and accurate rendering algorithms for synthetic scenes. Next a statistical analysis of this database will be performed, looking at the relationship between image luminance and dynamic range, aiming to understand how to properly combine visual data of different dynamic range and also to build/optimize a TM operator based on human visual perception. Finally, this knowledge will be applied as well to current vision models of lightness and contrast, with the goal of developing a perception-based visual quality metric for TM. The latter two stages involve psychophysical tests for the development and validation of the proposed models/methods.

Research Fields: All

Career Stage: Early stage researcher or 0-4 yrs (Post graduate)

Research Profiles: First Stage Researcher (R1)

Remuneration: Gross salary is 16.290 EUR the first two years, 16.850 EUR/year the third year.

Doctorado en el Center For Medical Image Computing (UCL)

University College London (London, UK)

Breve Descripción

We are loking for an highly motivated PhD candidate with strong image computing or machine learning background to work on Online Super-resolution for Fibre-bundle-based Video Acquisition Medical Devices.

Project background: Fibre-bundle-based video acquisition medical devices rely on a flexible coherent bundle of fibre optics to transport an image from the distal end of the fibre bundle to its proximal end where a detector captures the signal. The bundle may also be used to transport light from the proximal side to the distal end of the device. Of particular interest for this project in collaboration with Mauna Kea Technologies, is the implementation of such optical fibre bundles for probe-based Confocal Laser Endomicroscopy (pCLE) where the entire bundle is scanned at video rate with a laser. Other applications of fibre bundles in medical application can be found in the various fiberscopes available to the clinicians.

Scientific PhD Objectives: The goal of this PhD is to develop an online method to improve the image quality and resolution of fibre-bundle-based video acquisition medical devices. For each image, we envision to rely on 1) real-time image registration to collect redundant information from previous frames and 2) machine learning to drive indication-specific interpolation / in-painting techniques. The machine learning part will require training data. Such training data may be gathered for stable motion videos where high-resolution images can be generated with the previous time-consuming algorithm or may be generated in silico thanks to simulation and domain adaptation.

Envisioned Impact: The PhD project will focus on pCLE imaging, taking into account its specificities and target clinical applications. To a small extent, it will also evaluate the potential of using the developed technologies for other fibre-bundle-based imaging device such as fetoscopes or cholangioscopes.

For pCLE application, improving the image quality and resolution may not be the strongest expressed need from the clinicians point of view. However, we do believe that, as much as HD took over SD in traditional endoscopy mostly because of physician comfort rather that expressed need, super-resolved pCLE, once available, will become a feature deemed essential by the physicians.

Furthermore, super-resolved pCLE will allow pushing the boundaries of the current resolution versus field of view (FOV) trade-off. Indeed, the distal optics of the current most widely used clinical pCLE miniprobes have been designed to provide a very high resolution, sufficient to see the details of cellular architecture, at the expense at the FOV. With super-resolution in place, it will be possible to design pCLE miniprobes that 1) have a larger FOV 2) have a default resolution that only allows for imaging the gist of the cellular architecture but 3) can image the details of the cellular architecture once super-resolution is turned on. Although this would require hardware development on the miniprobe side in addition to software developments, this is advantageous because increasing the FOV is an expressed need by many pCLE users.

Finally, super-resolution can potentially be beneficial to any computational tools that use the images produced by pCLE as input. Image quality improvement can for example be beneficial for further image registration-based tools and for content-based image retrieval tools. This may potentially lead to better outcomes for computer-aided diagnosis support systems based on such tools.

Eligibility and to apply:

The studentship compromises of fees and a tax-free stipend of £16,851 per annum. In order to qualify candidates must be UK/EU passport holders or qualify for UCL home fees status.

Doctorado sobre Análisis de Imagen Cerebrovascular

University College London (Londres, UK)

Breve Descripción

Cerebrovascular disease is an umbrella term for diseases that affect the blood vessels supplying the brain. Different medical conditions, such as hypertension, cause permanent changes in the architecture of the blood vessels making them narrow, stiff, deformed, uneven and more vulnerable to fluctuations in blood pressure. These architectural changes can lead to ischemic stroke, caused by a reduction in blood flow due to narrowing blood vessels, or haemorrhagic stroke, caused by the tearing of the blood vessel wall.

Imaging modalities, such as computed tomography angiogram (CTA) or time of flight MRI angiography (TOF-MRI) provide detailed pictures of the cerebral blood vessels and vascular tree. In current clinical practice, radiologists visually inspect these images (detecting the presence of a blockage, and studying the shape, size and tortuosity of the vascular tree) in order to diagnose these cerebrovascular conditions. ?The aim of this PhD is to develop novel algorithms to extract, parameterise and quantify the morphological properties of the vascular tree, improving our ability to detect, predict and understand cerebrovascular pathology. The successful candidate will have access to a very large clinical database of CTA data (5000+ subjects) from stroke patients and TOF-MRI data from a cerebrovascular clinical trial (300+ subjects), and will join the UCL Centre for Doctoral Training in Medical Imaging programme (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/imaging-cdt)

Doctorado sobre Aprendizaje Profundo en Análisis de Imagen Médica

University of Liverpool (Liverpool, UK)

Breve Descripción

The primary aim of the project is to bring deep learning techniques to a new automated system for the screening of diabetic retinopathy for people with diabetes.

The diabetes-related eye problem known as diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in the working age population in the western world. To reduce the risk of blindness, all people with diabetes in the UK are invited for digital photographic screening of the retina every year. There are many challenges to the implementation of widespread systematic screening for sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy using digital retinal photography and the use of automation is one way to improve screening efficiency and ensure consistency and accuracy of grading. Building on our recent achievements in retinal image mining for eye disease, we propose to employ deep learning techniques to address this real-world problem further. The student will develop new software tools capable of retinopathy grading, optimise and validate them for reliability, repeatability and accuracy against on a large real image dataset collected from patients participating in the Liverpool Diabetic Eye Screening Programme.

The studentship would suit a candidate with a degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Physics, Engineering or Mathematics, and with a strong mathematical background and programming skills. The project will include the development and validation of advanced algorithms in deep learning, image analysis, machine learning, and GPU computing. The skills that the student will learn and apply during this multidisciplinary project will make them highly employable in industries of Healthcare and Information Sciences.

The Department of Eye and Vision Science (DEVS) is based in the Institute of Ageing and Chronic Disease (IACD) at the University of Liverpool. DEVS is a well-respected eye research institution. and has over 30 scientists. The department regularly meets at weekly research seminars. The IACD has a 100% PhD completion rate and was awarded an Athena Swan Silver award in 2014 in recognition of on-going commitment to ensuring that the Athena SWAN principles are embedded in its activities and strategic initiatives.

PhD studentship (collaboration KU - UC3M):

Title: Extracting and Interpreting Context-aware Behaviours in Constrained Environments
First Supervisor: Prof Tim Ellis (KU)
Second Supervisor: Jesus Garcia (UC3M)

Monitoring closed-circuit video (CCTV) systems that are widely deployed in both public and private spaces is typically manual, with camera views presented to human operators to observe and detect interesting events and actions. Operators also bring a depth of knowledge and understanding to the interpretation of how individuals behave and interact with their environment.

The aim of this project is to analyse video from CCTV cameras in order to interpret the behaviours and actions of individuals and small groups, and to understand them in the context of the scene (e.g. a shopping mall, a bus stop, car park). One objective will be to learn how the environment is used by individuals and to build semantically-rich descriptions of co-located actions and behaviours. A second objective is to build formal symbolic models and a common vocabulary to describe and communicate scene data whilst providing support for logic-based reasoning. Such models need to reason with uncertain information, and hence may incorporate probabilistic and fuzzy capabilities.

Descripción:

The main challenge of this project is to unify two major areas of knowledge: Information Technologies and Communications (ICT) and complex Biomedical problems, using high performance computing platforms required to solve the information provided by real/big data bases. One priority line of research in this project is to create advanced tools that can extract and manipulate knowledge coming from different heterogeneous sources. In many biomedical problems, it is possible to get information from digital signals, images, history / patient data bases, etc. In the case of bioinformatics databases the quantity, nature and volume of information grows exponentially with time. It is therefore of the utmost importance to stimulate the research on this very promising area. The research team has excellent relationships with professionals in a variety of bioinformatics research centers and universities national and international. The data which will therefore be provided by these professionals/entities, with which we expect to continue this fruitful cooperation and from which we expect to obtain the necessary feedback to validate the results we plan to achieve. The project has been divided into the following main objectives:

1.- Advanced Intelligent Systems in BioInformatics to identify the more relevant genes for early detection of specific cancer. In particular, we will analyze the pancretric cancer. In this objective, a novel challenge is defined: to merge the information that our team has previously obtained from microarray techniques (more of them are expected to be collected with the granting of this project), with the information obtained with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) using advanced and intelligent systems.

2.-Development of an advanced Computational System for the Optimization of Multiple Sequence Alignments by using heterogeneous Biological Features. The bioinformatics field is increasingly providing new challenges due to the need of analyzing the great amount of existing biological information, mainly extracted from new massive sequencing techniques. In this part of the project, we plan to create a novel database including a set of biological features related to protein sequences and their corresponding alignments, to implement an advanced score scheme to measure the quality of multiple sequence alignments based on a set of heterogeneous biological features and to develop a multiobjective algorithm for the optimization of multiple sequence alignments.

3.- Using the tools developed in a particular problem compared sequences of plasmid-DNA fragments and chromosome-DNA from two strains of lactic acid bacteria of industrial interest .

PhD studentship in imaging at UCL

University College London

Breve Descripción

Se ofrece un puesto para la realización de la tesis doctoral en el proyecto: "Computer aided diagnosis of pulmonary TB: the value of comparison with a prior film" codirigido por Dr. Paul Taylor y Dr. Andrew Hayward.

In 2011, 8.7 million people fell ill with tuberculosis (TB) and an estimated 1.4 million died from the disease. Although incidence is low in the UK, global mobility means that some London boroughs now have very high incidence rates. One of the primary tools in the diagnosis of TB is chest X-rays. However the images can be hard to interpret. We believe that these difficulties can be addressed with computer aided detection (CAD). Our hypothesis is that the sensitivity and specificity of CAD can be considerably enhanced by comparing the current with a previous X-ray. Such sequences are increasingly available for individuals who are screened more than once, or who attend for hospital appointments after or between screening visits. Analysis of sequences of images allows changes to be detected and used as cues in discriminating between disease and non-disease cases. Achieving this will require creating a research database of linked digital chest X-rays; making connections between images stored on different image databases; and registering pairs of images to highlight areas of abnormal change between successive images of the same patient.

The funding for this post will cover a stipend and the fees charged to UK and EU students. The higher fees charged to 'Overseas' or non EU students will not be covered by this funding.

PhD Studentship: Automatic Analysis of the Retinal Vasculature in ultra-Wide-Field-Of-View Angiographic Retinal Exams

Computer Vision and Image Processing Group, University of Dundee (Escocia)

Breve Descripción

SThe Marie Curie ITN REtinal VAscular Modeling, Measurement And Diagnosis (REVAMMAD) aims to train a new generation of scientists able to translate the latest vascular modeling theory and computerized image analysis techniques into effective interventions for some of the most important chronic medical conditions afflicting the EU, including hypertension and diabetes. It will particularly ensure a rich clinical and industrial involvement to focus training.

The REVAMMAD partners are the Univ of Lincoln (UK), the Univ of Dundee (UK), INRIA (France), Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin (Germany), the University of Copenhagen (Denmark), Aarhus University Hospital (Denmark), the Medical University of Vienna (Austria), the Univ of Padova (Italy) and Orobix srl (Italy).

The vasculature undergoes changes in response to early stages of these diseases, reflecting fundamental physiological processes within the vessels. The retina provides a unique “window onto the vasculature,” allowing it to be viewed directly and uninvasively, and measurements made in vivo. Advances in imaging technologies make it increasingly possible to measure subtle changes using computer vision algorithms. However the field is currently fragmented, with many excellent pockets of collaboration focused on defined specialisms, particularly between clinicians and modelers, or clinicians and measurement specialists, but lacking overall structure. Despite the importance and incidence of the diseases \and the evidence for the possibility of better diagnosis through imaging, there has been relatively little translation of theory into clinical practice. Integrative action is required to train researchers who understand the medical, clinical, technological and commercial aspects of the problem domain and to establish common working methodologies and tools across the field. REVAMMAD is designed to address these needs.

The successful candidate will be employed on a 36-month contract as REVAMMAD Early Stage Researcher in the School of Computing, Univ of Dundee, UK, and enrol on a PhD. Marie Curie Fellows receive an extremely generous rate of pay, including mobility support. Together with the associated training events and placements (see below) this provides a unique opportunity for outstanding PhD candidates to study for their doctorates.

The specific project at Dundee involves the development of algorithms and software for the automatic analysis of retinal angiographic exams in ultra-wide-field-of-view (UWFV) images (around 200 degrees), showing the retinal periphery as acquired by scanning laser ophthalmoscopes (SLO). The project builds on the long experience of the VAMPIRE group (see below), in particular work on retinal angiographic image sequences on sequence summarization, lesion detection (e.g., leakages, nonperfusion, ischemia), retinal biomarkers, and algorithm validation. The group has been collaborating for 10 years with OPTOS plc, world leader for UWFV SLO, with whom the successful candidates is expected to interact significantly. The main project targets are likely to be vascular location, characterization and measurement leveraging vascular models, and lesion detection and characterization. The work will leverage collaborations with the strong REVAMMAD consortium, as well as the extensive experience, clinical and international collaborations of the VAMPIRE project (see below).

The PhD project includes a 6-month research placement at a partner institution, and participation in consortium training courses, about 1 week each, on a wide range of topics including vascular modelling and retinal image processing. PhD studentship in medical image analsis

University of Lincoln (UK)

Breve Descripción

General Description: The University of Lincoln is seeking to appoint a new PhD student to join the recently established Laboratory of Vision Engineering (LoVE), at School of Computer Science. The centre is internationally recognised for its research in capture, transmission, processing and understanding of (medical) images, video and other high-dimensional data, and currently comprises 8 faculty staff. The successful candidate will be offered a studentship as part of a European collaborative project, involving seven academic institutes and two industrial partners across four European countries.

The School of Computer Science at the University of Lincoln scored highly in the UK Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008) with 85% of its outputs ranked at international quality or better with 15% ranked world-leading. The School provides a stimulating environment for academic research, and is based on the picturesque waterfront campus in the vibrant city of Lincoln in high quality, newly developed facilities.

Project Description: The project aims to develop novel approaches to provide a solution that offers access, collection, sharing and intelligent analysis of long term and consistent personal health status data through an integrated digital representation in silico environment, which will help to deliver clinical analysis, prediction, prevention and treatment tailored to the individual subject. The project is expected to exert a major influence on the reshaping of future healthcare in the handling of increased life expectancy and the ageing population.

This PhD studentship is focussed in the area of multi-scale medical image analysis to detect and measure abnormal growths (e.g. tumours), which will subsequently support clinically meaningful analysis, e.g. follow-up studies to evaluate the tumour response to therapy. Primary tasks include developing novel image analysis algorithms and approaches, including (but not limited to) robust segmentation, 3D reconstruction, image registration and feature extraction to support accurate analysis and reliable detection of a range of cancer diseases through the information available at different scales. It is expected that the availability of such information will help solve many uncertain cases caused by the ambiguity of data that is often seen at a single scale. For example, the analysis of histology images will provide significant measures to reach more trustworthy decisions for the detection of abnormal structures from the images at the organ level.

Academic Criteria: The successful candidate should possess a good honours degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related discipline. Applicants with a relevant Masters are particularly welcome. Experience in relevant areas including (but not limited to); (medical) image analysis, optimisation, image registration, and machine learning, would be an advantage. Evidence of ability to engage in scientific research and to work collaboratively as part of a team, including excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English, is required.

Funding: The studentship will cover tuition fees and a stipend based on the Research Council UK (RCUK) stipend levels for up to three years, as well as opportunities for travel and participation in international conferences and project meetings. The studentship offers the opportunity to engage in international collaboration within an ambitious team, and to benefit from excellent support to produce and disseminate original research contributions.

How to Apply: Interested candidates are invited to send a Curriculum Vitae to Dr Xujiong Ye (xye[at]lincoln.ac.uk) with the subject line “Application for PhD Position in Multi-scale medical image analysis”

Informal enquiries about the post can also be made to Dr Xujiong Ye (email: xye[at]lincoln.ac.uk) and/or Prof Nigel Allinson (email: nallinson11[at]gmail.com).

PhD Studentship and Postdoc available - retinal biomarkers

University of Dundee, School of Computing and Department of Clinical Radiology

Breve Descripción

We seek to appoint one postdoc research assistant and one PhD student for an interdisciplinary, joint research project at the Universities of Dundee (School of Computing and Ninewells Hospital) and the University of Edinburgh (Clinical Imaging Research Centre and Centre for Population Health Sciences) and in collaboration with the University of Genoa, Italy (Department of Computer and Information Science). Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in economically developed nations, causing tens of thousands of premature deaths per year in the UK and presenting and estimated overall annual cost around £30bn. This is projected to rise in line with other well-publicised aspects of ill health associated with westernised lifestyles such as type-2 diabetes. Predicting with greater precision who is at risk to target clinical interventions is a major goal in reducing cardiovascular mortality and morbidity and its associated costs. Moving towards this goal depends on being able to integrate relevant biological and clinical information at multiple levels, and identifying easily accessed and discriminatory biomarkers is a vital requirement in this process.

There is mounting evidence that features associated with retinal blood vessels, which are easily observed, are early indicators of cardiovascular disease. However, manual assessment and measurement of retinal vasculature and other features is time-consuming and laborious, and seriously impedes the analysis of the large numbers of patients required to power the biomarker discovery process.

These issues are addressed by this project. The focus is VAMPIRE (Vasculature Assessment and Measurement Platform for Images of the REtina) , an interdisciplinary initiative co-ordinated by the co-investigators of this project, Prof Trucco (Univ of Dundee) and Dr MacGillivray (Univ of Edinburgh). VAMPIRE brings together 11 international centres from the UK, Italy, Singapore and the US. Collectively, a very substantial body of expertise and publications, and has been growing a software platform allowing efficient measurements of morphometric retinal parameters (vessel width, tortuosity, branching angles and fractal dimension).

Building on this background, the project aims to :

  1. extend and refine the VAMPIRE software tool incorporating novel, extensively validated algorithms including artery-vein classification and multi-fractal analysis;
  2. use VAMPIRE on large numbers of digitised retinal images supplied by two richly characterized prospective bio-resources in Edinburgh (ORCADES) and Dundee (WT_T2Dcc);
  3. integrate both established retinal features and novel features from VAMPIRE with the rich genomic and phenotypic information available in these platforms to enable integrated analysis in a systems biology approach, to establish molecular pathoaetiological pathways and the clinical value of VAMPIRE-derived imaging biomarkers in stratifying cardiovascular risk;
  4. design a web-based implementation of the VAMPIRE tool, incorporating a subset of measurements, to be released as a public, moderated-access software tool for retinal measurements.

Further particulars advertising these posts are being published on www.jobs.dundee.ac.uk and other websites.

Postdoc Research Assistant in retinal image processing (grade 7, apprx. £28,000 per year).

This post is for three years to work under the direction of Prof Emanuele Trucco within the VAMPIRE (Vascular Assessment and Measurement Platform for Images of the REtina) international initiative. Computer Vision for Forensic Anatomy: Is this the offender's hand?

University of Dundee (Escocia)

Breve Descripción

El grupo de investigación de Computer Vision and Image Processing está buscando un candidato para realizar la tesis en identificación forense. Application deadline is Nov. 4, 2011.

Motivation:

Since 2006, CAHID has been involved in an increasing number of court cases, mostly related to paedophilia, in which key evidence was supplied in the form of a photograph showing a naked part of the presumed offender’s body (e.g., hand, forearm) in the course of sexual molestation. Subject identification from such photograph was attempted on the basis of morphological and skin features, for instance the pattern of superficial veins, tendons, scars and birth marks. A dramatic turn was taken when an offender pleaded guilty after being shown the photograph and its analysis, the first time in the UK this kind of evidence was successfully used in a paedophile case. CAHID is currently the only group in the UK consulting actively for the police and the judiciary system on this new type of evidence.

There is however very little work available on the identification of a subject, or complementarily the exclusion of a subject, given a photograph of a body part. Consider that the photographs in question are not the ones usually available for biometrics under subject co-operation, as they are taken with concealed cameras with no control over the offender. In addition, little is known on the discriminative power of the visible features observable, i.e., the uncertainty of a positive or negative identification.

Computer vision could provide repeatable image quantification and hence reliable criteria on which to base a decision. CAHID and CVIP have carried out an initial collaborative pilot with an ERASMUS student (CVIPg) and a PhD student (CAHID) adapting the retinal image analysis suite of program (VAMPIRE) developed by CVIPg. The results suggest there is merit in using computer vision techniques for segmentation (vasculature location), measurement and feature selection techniques to identify most discriminative sets of measures. The pilot was performed on a database of images collected by CAHID, currently 500-strong.

Profile:

  • have completed a degree in a numerate discipline with, at least, a global 2.1 grade (high B, or minimum of 65%); experience or master-level degrees in image processing and computer vision would be a definite advantage;;
  • be conversant with undergraduate mathematics, and have excellent programming skills; familiarity with MATLAB and C++ under Windows would be an advantage;
  • have good initiative, be enthusiastic about research, and be prepared to work independently as well as within an interdisciplinary research group ;
  • be prepared to collaborate with a department of anatomy under forensic guidelines.

Contact: Send a detailed CV, a personal statement, and the names and email addresses of two referees to Prof Emanuele Trucco of CVIP ( manueltrucco[at]computing.dundee.ac.uk) by 4/11/2011.

PhD Studentships in Computer Vision and Biomedical Image Analysis

University of Dundee

Breve Descripción

Please go to www.computing.dundee.ac.uk/projects/vision for full details.

Please check eligibility before applying: www.epsrc.ac.uk/funding/students/pages/eligibility.aspx

We seek highly motivated applicants for fully-funded PhD studentships to work on interdisciplinary research projects at the University of Dundee, Scotland. The successful applicants will be based primarily in the Computer Vision and Image Processing Group, School of Computing but will receive inter-disciplinary research training. We will encourage dissemination at relevant high quality conferences, and will target top-level journals for publication

Studentship 1: Automatic Analysis of Breast Cancer Tissue Microarray Images

Supervisory team: Prof Stephen McKenna (CVIP, School of Computing), Prof Alastair Thompson (Surgery & Molecular Oncology), Dr Lee Jordan (Clinical Leader for Pathology and Consultant Pathologist). The aim is to further develop computational methods for automatic segmentation of tumour regions in breast cancer tissue microarray images, and for automatic immunohistochemical scoring. Assessment of stained tissue sections remains laborious and constitutes a bottleneck in the pathologist’s work-flow. There is strong clinical and research-related motivation for the development of improved automated methods for quantitative analysis of these images. Whereas our previous work has focused largely on evaluation of nuclear-stained images, this project will broaden the scope to non-nuclear (cytoplasmic and membrane) stains. An initial focus will be on the development of models of tissue structure that incorporate contextual information and support efficient learning and inference. Methods will be validated using data from the Tayside tissue bank.

Studentship 2: Is this the Offender’s Hand?

Supervisory team: Prof Emanuele Trucco, (CVIP, School of Computing), Prof Sue Black, OBE (Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification, College of Life Sciences). Given the visibility of CAHID as the expert forensic centre in the UK on the analysis of photographic evidence involving body parts, and the experience of CVIP with automatic vasculature analysis, we have a unique opportunity to build on our pilot study to achieve results which could have high impact for paedophile investigations. In essence, we propose to acquire larger numbers of body parts from volunteers, mainly hands and feet, in controlled conditions; develop automatic or semi-automatic software quantifying a number of features which could lead to subject identification; apply feature selection techniques to identify the maximally discriminative set of features within a controlled sample; determine an anatomical interpretation for such set (validation). Challenges and extension to this basic scheme include the reliable measurement of body part features in crime scene images, acquired in uncontrolled conditions and hence not directly comparable with images of suspects, and the creation of a statistically meaningful database within the study.

Candidate profile

Successful applicants for both of these studentships will have the following profile:

  • A first class (or at least a strong 2:1 class/high B/min. 65%) undergraduate degree in a numerate discipline
  • Preferably a Masters level degree in a relevant discipline
  • Conversant with undergraduate mathematics
  • Excellent programming skills; familiarity with MATLAB and C++ an advantage
  • Enthusiastic about research and determined to pursue a research career; previous exposure to computer vision, image processing and machine learning would be an advantage
  • Have initiative and be prepared to work independently as well as within an interdisciplinary research group
  • Applicants for “Is this the Offender’s Hand?” should be prepared to work under forensic guidelines and operate within a department of anatomy

Eligibility

These studentships are partly funded by EPSRC and all applicants should check their eligibility before applying. Specifically, a full award (stipend and fees) will only be available to students satisfying the UK residence requirements as described here: www.epsrc.ac.uk/funding/students/pages/eligibility.aspx. EU applicants eligible for a fees-only award must provide evidence of existing subsistence funds for the full 3.5 years of the PhD at or near the current level (about 13,000 pounds per year) stipulated by the UK Research Councils. Applications not meeting the eligibility conditions will not be considered.

How to apply

Applicants must provide a detailed CV, personal statement, and names and email addresses of 3 referees by 15 June 2011 to Prof Emanuele Trucco and Prof Stephen McKenna at manueltrucco@computing.dundee.ac.uk, stephen@computing.dundee.ac.uk
